What's The Best Way To Manage Acne Or Breakouts During IVF?

Up to 50% of adult women experience acne at some point in their lives, often triggered by hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and fertility treatments like IVF.

Join our Consultant Dermatologist Advisor, Professor Caitriona Ryan, as she shares expert advice on what skincare is recommended during IVF, why it matters, and when to start incorporating it into your routine.

Why Does IVF Cause Acne & Breakouts?

Acne and breakouts are extremely common during IVF due to the hormones that are involved in the process of IVF. These hormones - particularly estrogen and progesterone, and sometimes androgens - can significantly impact the skin.

One of the key contributors to breakouts is the increased level of androgens (male hormones like testosterone) that may occur during IVF treatment. These hormones can cause the sebaceous (oil) glands in the skin to produce more sebum, which can clog pores and lead to acne.

What Can't You Use During IVF Treatment & What Can You Replace Them With?

Experts generally advise against using retinoids or oral antibiotics (common treatments for acne) during IVF or pregnancy. Instead, it’s recommended to opt for gentler, pregnancy-safe alternatives such as:

  • Azelaic acid or it's derivatives
  • Niacinamide
  • Hyaluronic Acid

It’s always important to moisturise, but during IVF, it becomes especially essential. The hormonal fluctuations involved in fertility treatment can cause your skin to swing between oily and dry, often at unpredictable times. If your skin becomes too dry and lacks proper hydration, it may go into overdrive, producing excess oil in an attempt to compensate. This overproduction can clog pores and trigger more breakouts.

Final Thoughts...

Navigating skin changes during IVF can be challenging, but with the right skincare approach, it’s possible to support your skin through this sensitive time. Gentle & hydrating, products can help maintain balance and minimise breakouts without interfering with your treatment.

Everyone’s skin responds differently to hormonal shifts, so it’s important to listen to your body. If you experience sudden or severe acne breakouts during IVF, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice from a dermatologist or your fertility specialist. They can guide you toward safe and effective options tailored to your unique needs & help to reduce scarring.
