The Inspiration Behind SKN TO SKN
Hi, I’m Sara, founder of SKN TO SKN and proud mother of two little girls. When I was pregnant with my first child in 2020, I struggled with severe skin issues such as acne, dryness, and heightened sensitivity which were triggered by the surge of pregnancy hormones. It wasn’t until I was six months along that I realised I had been using the wrong skincare products. Some contained retinol and high concentrations of other active ingredients that not only worsened my skin but could also have posed potential risks to my unborn child.
Shocked by how little I knew about which skincare ingredients to avoid during pregnancy, I set out to find pregnancy-safe solutions. I visited my local high street retailer, only to be directed to the maternity section which was tucked between nappies and baby food where I found stretch mark creams, nipple balms, and products designed for both mother and baby, but nothing specifically for my face. Store after store gave me the same response: "There are no facial skincare brands dedicated to all stages of pregnancy." I felt frustrated and overwhelmed, realising that the responsibility of ensuring my skincare was safe fell entirely on me. The conflicting information I found online only added to my confusion, making me feel overlooked and undervalued in an area that should have been a priority
Growing My Family
Fast forward two years, and I found myself pregnant with my second daughter. Even before taking a pregnancy test, my skin flared up with the same concerns I had faced
during my first pregnancy. I returned to the same retailers, hoping to finally find pregnancy-safe skincare, but nothing had changed. Packaging lacked clear safety information, forcing me to scrutinise ingredient lists—just as I had once done with food before “gluten-free” and “dairy-free” became widely recognised.
I was shocked to learn that 90% of women experience severe and complex skin issues during pregnancy, yet there were no dedicated solutions available. As one of them, I realised there was a significant gap in the market for safe, effective facial skincare products designed specifically for women who are trying to conceive, pregnant, breastfeeding, or navigating postpartum recovery.
Empowering Mothers Through Skincare
With a toddler and a newborn in tow, I made the life-changing decision to leave my 15-year career in the music industry to launch SKN TO SKN. The brand name was inspired by the powerful skin-to-skin bonding experience, which fosters deep mental and physical connections between mothers and their babies after birth. Today, I am proud to have built an incredible team of respected consultant dermatologists, GPs, and expert formulators, all of whom are mothers themselves. Together, we are committed to reassuring women with safe, effective skincare solutions. Our mission goes beyond creating trusted products; we aim to educate and empower women with the knowledge they need to confidently care for their skin at every stage, whether they’re trying to conceive (naturally or with fertility treatments), pregnant, breastfeeding, or in postpartum recovery.
