How Do I Treat & Soothe Itchy Skin During Pregnancy?

Around 20–25% of pregnant women report experiencing itching, typically without any underlying systemic conditions*, this makes it one of the most common skin concerns during pregnancy. Yet despite how frequent it is, many still struggle to understand what causes it, how to relieve it, and when it's time to seek professional advice.

In this episode, our GP Advisor Dr. Raj Arora shares her personal experience with itchy skin during pregnancy, what causes it, how to manage it, and when to seek professional advice.

What Causes Itchy Skin?

Even when you aren't pregnant, Itchy skin can be a reason to see a doctor. That’s because it can sometimes be linked to liver-related conditions, and it's important to get checked with appropriate tests. If you're experiencing persistent itching, don’t ignore it and seek medical advice.

What Can You Do To Soothe Itchy Skin During Pregnancy?

Once you’ve had your blood tests and other investigations done and no underlying issues are identified, your healthcare provider may recommend treatment to manage the symptoms. In many cases, a pregnancy-safe antihistamine is prescribed to help relieve the itching and improve overall comfort. While it may not address the root cause if none is found, it can offer much-needed relief and help you sleep and function better throughout your pregnancy.

Maintaining a good skincare routine is key. If you have dry skin, opt for an oil-based cleanser that helps hydrate and protect the skin barrier, rather than gels or foams, which can be drying. Incorporating a rich emollient is also recommended, as these thick, greasy moisturisers lock in moisture and soothe irritation, helping to keep your skin nourished and comfortable.

What Is The 'Golden Minute'?

The “golden minute” refers to the first 60 seconds after you finish showering which is a key window of time when your skin is still slightly damp and most receptive to moisture. Applying your moisturiser or emollient during this period helps:

  • Lock in hydration from water left on your skin
  • Prevent moisture loss (especially if you have dry skin)
  • Strengthen the skin barrier which is crucial during pregnancy

This technique is especially beneficial for managing itchy or dry skin, as it maximizes the effectiveness of your moisturiser.

Treating & Soothing Itchy Skin: Final Thoughts

If your itchiness persists despite trying these suggestions or if it's keeping you up at night, affecting your concentration, or interfering with your quality of life, it’s strongly recommended that you see your GP for further guidance and support.
