What Is The Best Treatment For PostPartum Abdominal Scars?

According to a 2025 survey of 330 postpartum women conducted by The National Library of Medicine, 41% said they hadn’t received enough guidance on how to care for their postpartum scarring.

Our Consultant Dermatologist Advisor, Professor Caitriona Ryan, shares expert advice on caring for postpartum scars and highlights the treatments recommended to support healing and improve their appearance.

What Can I Use Immediately On My Scar Post Surgery?

The most important thing to keep in mind is caring for your scar properly. If the wound doesn’t heal well or the scar becomes infected, it can lead to more visible scarring. Using silicone sheets which can be trimmed to fit the size of your scar is recommended, as they’ve been shown to help improve the scar’s appearance and texture from early on.

What Can I Use A Month Post Surgery?

  • Retinols or retinoids

These can aid in remodelling the collagen in your skin.

  • Astaxanthin

Astaxanthin is great for scars because it has both antioxidant activity whilst remodelling collagen. It can also be used much earlier due to its wound healing properties.

Can I Use Laser Treatments?

It’s generally recommended to wait around six months before considering laser treatments for postpartum scars. This allows the scar time to mature naturally, as time itself is one of the most effective factors in improving scar appearance - with visible improvements often continuing for up to two years.

When the time is right, experts suggest treatments such as CO2 laser therapy combined with radiofrequency microneedling, as well as fractionated ablative lasers. These approaches can help further refine the scar’s texture and appearance.

Final Thoughts

Caring for postpartum scars is a gradual process, and giving your body time to heal naturally is just as important as the treatments you choose. From gentle early care with silicone sheets to later options like collagen-boosting ingredients and advanced laser therapies, there are many ways to support scar healing and improve their appearance. Always consult your healthcare provider or dermatologist to find the right approach for your unique recovery journey.
